お正月にめりさんはあそくとそふぼ（grandparents)の家にとまる言っていました。日本人はたいていお正月におぞうにを食べると言っていました。わたしはめりさんとアメリカのおんがくと日本のおんがくどうちのほうがすきですかききましたか。どうちらもすきと言っていました。ハリイポッタ（Harry Potter)がいちばんえいががすきといっていました。
I liked hearing about some of the various traditions that are associated with new years in Japan. Ozouni sounds really good and I would like make some some time for my new years festivities, because we really don't have any kind of stand food that we eat on the day. Most of the times in the US we just get together with a few friends and have a party, there are some traditions associated with it (such as watching the ball in Times Square drop) but there isn't really all that much. Perhaps it would be fun to make some for the future.

I really miss spiritual/ritual aspects of Japanese new year's. Living in the U.S. I don't feel like I welcome the new year, it just like nother day...

I think it is because the U.S. is a younger nation compared to most others. Even though our population is made up of immigrants who brought their traditions with them, most of those traditions have been lost. Because Japan is a much older country than ours with a longer history, they have a lot more traditional ceremonies. I agree with you; we should make some new meaningful ceremonies in the U.S. Even the traditions in Japan had to start with something.
ReplyDeleteI think tradition is always changing/evolving... nowadays, some peopel even don't cook おせちりょうりfor New year's, which is sad... well, it is a log of work and doesn't make sense to make the traditional meal for small family like family of 3 or so... But don't worry! you can buy おせちat a store.
